Engine belts and the power of the engine

The major parts of your engine are usually run by belts. Engine belts could be easy to ignore until something goes wrong. Knowing how to care for your engines is incredibly significant – so how do you do it?

Belting out the basics

Most belts in autos are made from rubber or a combination of rubber and plastic. . Because belts are run in hot-and-cold conditions, they’re a lot more prone to wearing out. Generally, a belt is used to run a fan, the alternator, and any accessories. Each component, in older engines, was run by a separate belt. Most engines built following the late ‘80s use a single “serpentine” belt.

Replacing the belts

When a belt begins to squeal or screech, it means that it is stretching out. Have your belts checked every time you take your car in for service. Replace the belts all at once – if one is wearing out, replace them all. With some experience, replacing a belt is relatively easy. First, copy down the diagram of how the belt runs around the engine. Remove the tension from the belt before you remove it. Tighten up the tension after you put the new belt within the engine.

Dress the belt?

There is a theory that “dressing” a belt — lubricating it with a specialty spray or liquid — can help it last longer. This theory only kind of works, though. For a short time, if you dress a belt, it will get quieter. Remember, though, that a belt making noise is a warning that something is going wrong. While you are on your way to the mechanic, you can justify dressing the belt – but in most situations, you should just get it checked out.
